Head In the Clouds S01E03 - Disaster Recovery
Time & Location
About the Event
Disaster rarely happens, but when it does; can be incredibly damaging financially, reputationally and can impact client confidence.
The cloud offers disaster recovery protection however there's alot more to it than simply adding your workloads into protection and leaning back in your chair with a contented smile.
Here we will discuss some of the key considerations when using Azure cloud for disaster recovery including costs, choosing the right method of protection and how to perform tests without creating operational impact.
Agenda (with talking points):
0800 - 0805: Introductions
What DR solutions are in use by attendees, discuss the pros and cons.
0804 - 0815: Understanding the business need
Deciding which systems to protect.
Budget constraints and savings.
Recovery point objectives i.e. how often to replicate, maybe recovery from backups meet the need.
Recovery time objectives i.e. how quickly do you need to recovery.
What order to recover in.
How are users to interact with the solution, could be WVD, web access.
0815 - 08:30: Cloud versus traditional disaster recovery
Massive cost savings by allowing the removal of a second DC or colo.
Only pay for the systems replicated data, only pay for VMs when recovered.
Able to test without impact to prod but:
- Cost impact
- difficult to test external connectivity to avoid data polution into prod
0830 - 0840: Other considerations
Need to stand up network environment prior to failover.
Need to stand up external connectivity prior to failover.
think external partner services locked down to specific IPs.
Cost of shipping your data between cloud regions.
Scripting your recovery.
0840 - 0845: Conclusion, conclude the event, saying thank you and starting your day
